About
Why The Sandy Seamstress?
The Sandy Seamstress represents fun, peacefulness and creativity for students on Maui to learn the art of sewing, as well as patrons to receive garment alterations for every occasion.
It has been quite the process to be able to create this space. And my lifelong journey with sewing has been a huge inspiration in teaching others everything I have learned over the years. I first started at a young age through my grandmother and mother who introduced me to crochet, embroidering, quilting & patterns. In my teens, I explored with pattern making and re-purposing recycled clothing. And when I was 18 year old I decided to design my first swimsuit line in my college dormitory and later produced it overseas.
After that experience, I knew that sewing would forever be a huge part of my life and decided to follow my dreams and study under a couture bridal designer in New York City and assist with runway shows.
When I found my way back home, to the beautiful island of Maui, I created Sable Rose Bikinis, where I handmade custom, one of a kind, reversible swimwear.
Not long after, I was making over 1000 masks to sell at local stores during covid-19 lockdown, all while 7 months pregnant. And after having my daughter, I began working as a seamstress for a local bridal shop, where I was able to design for the Na Hoku Awards.
After being invited to teach at UH Maui College, I unlocked a new aspect of my journey in showing students how to sew.
All that being said and everything that has been done-
To me, sewing is about the experience and sharing it with others.
The cozy feeling of childhood, and family.
Focusing on something beyond ourselves in the moment.
Creating something to be proud of.
The learning process of it all. Growing your knowledge and having success. And sometimes having to rip out all your stitches and starting again.
The quiet moments alone, and also the profound and funny conversations while working together.
The excitement of making something special for someone special (or even for yourself).
Welcome to The Sandy Seamstress
Where sewing is no longer a dying art.
